CONTEXT

During the Tigray war, which began in November 2020, there were reports of systematic gender-based violence against women and girls in the region. The war, involving Ethiopian federal forces, Eritrean forces and Tigrayan regional forces, has also led to a humanitarian crisis. This is marked by massive displacement, food shortages and lack of access to medical care. Women and girls have been victims of gang rape and sexual abuse, and some have been detained and abused for days on end.

Health infrastructures in Tigray have been severely disrupted by the conflict. As a result, access to medical care is limited. The lack of psychological support and support for survivors aggravates the situation. In addition, thousands of displaced women are living in precarious conditions in refugee camps. They continue to face increased risks of violence and exploitation.

THE PROJECT

The project aims to support 150 women who were victims of sexual violence during the war in Tigray. The project provides psychosocial care, medical support and legal assistance. In addition, it offers vocational training and economic opportunities to promote the financial autonomy of the beneficiaries.

Key project activities include the establishment of community support clubs. The aim is to strengthen Survivors’ skills in rights, leadership and economic management. Emotional healing programs are also organized to support women on their recovery journey. The project also relies on partnerships with local organizations, community leaders and religious institutions to create an inclusive and safe environment for Survivors.

The project places particular emphasis on community involvement and awareness-raising on issues of gender-based violence. Advocacy for Ethiopian Survivors’ rights and access to justice are also at the heart of interventions. Working with local legal associations and universities, the aim is to support victims’ legal actions against the perpetrators of violence, and to work towards a lasting change in the social norms that perpetuate such violence.
