Some are fortunate enough to enjoy a peaceful holiday season. For others, it’s a completely different reality. If you are among the fortunate ones, Orange Week serves as a reminder that much remains to be done in the fight against violence against women. Using our privilege and strength to support those who suffer and raise awareness about their cause is a meaningful way to embrace the spirit of sharing that defines this time of year.

“Rape as a weapon of war” is a global issue that is difficult to quantify due to the stigma and insecurity faced by victims. The United Nations estimates that this phenomenon increased by 50% in 2023. This cause has become the main focus of Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, her association Stand Speak Rise Up! founded in 2019, and Luxair, which is supporting the association through a new partnership.

We meet her at Colmar-Berg Castle on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the association Stand Speak Rise Up!, which she founded with the aim of denouncing rape as a weapon of war, preventing its proliferation, and supporting the victims—women and children born from these rapes—in their recovery and quest for justice.

The Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, a Cuban exile, has shaken up the rigid norms of Luxembourg since her marriage to Prince Henri in 1981. Despite her role often being limited to representative functions, she has been deeply involved in humanitarian causes. Maria Teresa founded the association Stand Speak Rise Up! to support survivors of sexual violence in conflict zones. She has also collaborated with international figures such as Dr. Denis Mukwege and Muhammad Yunus on social projects.

Her humanitarian initiatives have sometimes been criticized by the Luxembourg government, which commissioned a report on her expenses. However, Maria Teresa continues to pursue her actions independently, with the support of her family and friends like Stéphane Bern. She aspires to challenge the norms of the Luxembourg monarchy and leave a legacy of social commitment for future royal generations.
